SPENDING OUT OF CONTROL IN PALMETTO STATE

FITSNews - July 15, 2007 - South Carolina’s Republican-led General Assembly has grown government nearly twice as fast as the national average over the past three years, with our 41% increase nearly doubling the 23.8% growth rate of the average state over that same time period.

According to a new report by the National Association of State Budget Officers (NASBO), the average state government grew spending by 6.5%, 8.7% and 8.6% in the last three years, respectively.

We’d just like to take this opportunity to remind you that South Carolina is “Republican Country.” And Republicans are supposed to be the party of “limited government.”

Will, this simply cannot be true. My husband, the libertarian (oops I meant Republican) believes in smaller government. So, if what you say is true, my husband is either a fool, or incompetent…or maybe both. But how can this be? How did I not notice sooner?

Even now as I write this he is off somewhere in this God forsaken backwoods state, babbling about “big box” retail tax incentives. Some people ask why he is talking about that just now, I mean right after his veto on the subject was overridden by those local peasants in the General Assembly, and his answer is that he might forget about them and the whole subject by the time the appropriation hearings start…in March of 2008! Of course he does tend to forget things…heck, this year he forgot the General Assembly was even meeting till it was veto time. Then he got his “ass handed to him”…or something like that…at least that is what I heard one of our 12 member security detail say. Or was it one of the servants…heck, I forget now.

Well, I told him the only “big box” he need to worry about was mine, and to come on home to this shack you people call a mansion.
Hugs and kisses,
Jenny

That’s just wrong in so many ways….

Will,

The front-page story about deadbeat Republicans in this morning’s Wall Street Journal echoes the content of your blog over the past few months.

“Despite their control of nearly every elected statewide position and huge majorities in both houses of the legislature, South Carolina Republicans have been unable to deliver on significant campaign promises, including a program that would give state residents vouchers to help pay for private schools.

In May, a split among Republican blocs allowed a coalition of Democrats and some Republicans to engineer the selection of a Democrat for a rare opening on the state Supreme Court. The party’s once-tight control of state spending has weakened. The state’s current $6 billion budget now includes a $9 million grant fund for pet projects, such as festivals celebrating pork and catfish in various legislative districts. Last month, Senate leaders, angered by what they saw as an attempt to blame them for a budgetary logjam, crashed a news conference held by Gov. Mark Sanford and House leaders in a bid to tell their side of the story.”

Disappointing…

A complete lack of leadership by Katon Dawson and Mark Sanford has allowed the party to become a slim parody of itself. Integrity has been replaced by opportunity. Honor, by self-interest.

There is little they or those close to them will not do for money, power or glory. Lindsay and Mark are flying high with millions of dollars in the bank, while the rest of us beg for a basic notion to conservatism. Our taxes go up, our services go down…and our leaders live like kings.

I work for a think tank out here in Colorado and I am doing an analysis of the growth in the Coloraodo state government. Is there any way you could send me the name of the new report by the NASBO, or a link to it?
